# Cybersecurity, Defence and AI Executive Search

KiTalent's centre of excellence for cybersecurity, defence technology and artificial intelligence. The practice is based in Larnaca, is led personally by Founder and Group CEO Alessio Montaruli, and runs mandates in these three fields worldwide rather than for a single region.

Track record on suitable mandates: 7–10 working days to validated shortlist · 96% one-year retention · NPS 72. [How we measure performance](/methodology#performance-metrics).

## Why one team leads these three fields worldwide

KiTalent's Larnaca office is the firm's centre of excellence for [cybersecurity](/ai-technology-and-digital-infrastructure-recruitment/cybersecurity-recruitment), [defence technology](/mobility-aerospace-and-defense-recruitment/defense-recruitment) and [artificial intelligence](/ai-technology-and-digital-infrastructure-recruitment/artificial-intelligence-recruitment). It leads those three practices for the firm worldwide rather than covering a region. A cybersecurity mandate in Frankfurt, a defence-technology mandate in Washington and an AI mandate in Tel Aviv are all run to the same standard from Larnaca, working with whichever regional hub holds the market knowledge.

These three fields were grouped deliberately. They draw on an overlapping population of engineers and commercial leaders, they move at the same pace, and the credible field for a given senior role is rarely contained within one country. Concentrating them in a single practice keeps one team accountable for that field rather than dividing it across four regional offices.

### Fast mapping, slow judgment

Mapping a market is now fast. Modern tooling can identify the whole relevant field in an afternoon, and that is genuinely useful. Reading a person is slow, and it has to be owned by somebody who can answer for the decision. The market map tells you who to assess. It is not the assessment.

In cybersecurity, defence technology and AI the credible field for a senior role is small and it is global. The same few hundred people recur across mandates in different countries, and a team that sees that field repeatedly reads it better than four teams each seeing a quarter of it. Any hub can map it. Judging it well enough to stake a recommendation on is what the practice exists to do.

The same principle governs how the firm charges. Under its published [Proof-First model](/interview-fee-model), the main fee falls due only after a validated shortlist has been delivered, so the firm is paid once its judgment has been shown rather than before. Naming one office accountable for a field and deferring the fee until the evidence exists are two forms of the same commitment: somebody has to be answerable for the shortlist.

### Where this is not the right route

This practice earns its place on cross-border, technical and culture-critical briefs where no single national market contains the whole relevant field. Where a mandate sits entirely inside one national market, and a domestic specialist with a twenty-year local network will simply know the field better, that specialist is the better appointment. Buyers should decide which of the two their search actually is before appointing anybody.

### What these mandates have in common

The briefs this practice takes tend to share the same three properties, whatever the country they sit in.

- ● A credible field that is small, global, and largely not applying for anything

- ● Technical assessment that a generalist cannot carry out

- ● Clearance, export-control or regulatory constraints on who can be approached

## What the practice covers

Three fields, one team, and the constraints that shape every mandate in them.

### Cybersecurity

covers security leadership across enterprise, industrial and critical-infrastructure environments: CISOs, heads of security engineering, OT and ICS security leads, and the commercial leadership of security vendors. The population that can run security for a port, a grid operator or a bank at senior level is small and it does not move often, which is why these searches are run as direct approaches rather than advertised roles. See the [cybersecurity recruitment practice](/ai-technology-and-digital-infrastructure-recruitment/cybersecurity-recruitment).

### Defence technology

covers engineering and commercial leadership for defence primes, suppliers and dual-use technology companies, including roles that require candidates to hold or be eligible for high-level security clearance. Clearance status, nationality restrictions and export-control rules narrow the field before capability is even assessed, and a search that ignores those constraints produces a shortlist the client cannot hire from. See the [defence recruitment practice](/mobility-aerospace-and-defense-recruitment/defense-recruitment).

### Artificial intelligence

covers research and applied-AI leadership, heads of machine learning, and the commercial leaders who take AI capability to market. The field moves faster than any published market map survives, so the practice maintains standing relationships rather than rebuilding a picture of the market at the start of every mandate. See the [artificial intelligence recruitment practice](/ai-technology-and-digital-infrastructure-recruitment/artificial-intelligence-recruitment).

### Cleared and clearable candidates

are handled as a distinct category rather than an afterthought. Where a role requires an existing clearance, the credible field can be a fraction of the technically qualified population, and the realistic options are usually to hire someone already cleared, to sponsor a candidate who is eligible, or to restructure the role. We set that out at the briefing stage so the timeline reflects it, rather than discovering it at offer.

### Working with the regional hubs

is how the practice reaches local markets. Larnaca leads the field; [Nicosia](/nicosia), Turin, Almaty and New York hold the market knowledge, the local relationships and the language. On a cross-border brief the practice runs the assessment and the regional hub runs the ground, which is the arrangement that lets one team stay accountable for the judgment without pretending to local presence it does not have.

## The three fields, and the practices behind them

Each field has its own candidate population, its own constraints on who may be approached, and its own definition of what a credible shortlist looks like. The practice runs all three; the pages below set out how each one works.

### Cybersecurity

CISOs, heads of security engineering, OT and ICS security leadership, and the commercial leadership of security vendors.

### Defence Technology

Engineering and commercial leadership for defence primes, suppliers and dual-use companies, including cleared roles.

### Artificial Intelligence

Research and applied-AI leadership, heads of machine learning, and the commercial leaders who take AI capability to market.

## How the two Cyprus offices divide the work

KiTalent operates two offices in Cyprus, and they do different jobs. The distinction is the reason for opening a second one rather than enlarging the first.

[Nicosia is geographic.](/nicosia) It remains KiTalent's regional hub for the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Africa, running senior management and specialist leadership searches across those markets in the same way Turin covers Europe, Almaty covers Central Asia and New York covers the Americas. A Cyprus-based mandate, or a regional mandate in the Gulf or the Levant, is run from Nicosia.

Larnaca is sectoral. It is the centre of excellence for cybersecurity, defence technology and artificial intelligence, and it leads those three practices worldwide. A cybersecurity mandate is run from Larnaca whether the client is in Cyprus, Germany or Singapore.

The two offices together form KiTalent's Cyprus hub. Cyprus sits inside the European Union while operating a short flight from the Gulf and the Levant, on a working day that overlaps the United States in the afternoon and Asia in the morning. That suits both jobs: European legal and regulatory footing with working proximity for the regional hub, and a time zone that reaches clients on three continents in one day for the worldwide practices.

## Why companies appoint KiTalent for these mandates

Companies rarely need only reach in these fields. They need interpretation, calibration, and a search architecture that reflects the real structure of the market.

### We operate across four regional hubs

The practice runs mandates through KiTalent's four regional hubs, combining local market intelligence with cross-border execution across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific.

### We reach the candidates that matter

The strongest candidates in these fields are passive. Our direct headhunting approach engages the passive majority of senior talent through discreet outreach rooted in real market knowledge.

### We do not start from scratch

Our parallel mapping methodology means we already hold live intelligence on restructuring, transition windows, compensation patterns, and candidate attraction opportunities when a brief arrives.

### Our model de-risks the investment

In cybersecurity, defence technology and AI, the cost of a wrong senior hire extends far beyond the recruitment fee. Our [Proof-First Search](/interview-fee-model) model lets clients see real market output and qualified candidates before the bulk of the investment is committed.

## Frequently asked questions about the cybersecurity, defence and AI practice

The questions we are asked most often about how this practice works.

### What does KiTalent's Larnaca office actually do?

It is the firm's centre of excellence for cybersecurity, defence technology and artificial intelligence, and it leads those three practices worldwide rather than covering a region. Mandates in those fields are run from Larnaca regardless of where the client sits, working with whichever regional hub holds the local market knowledge. Regional searches in Cyprus and the wider Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa are run from our [Nicosia hub](/nicosia), not from Larnaca.

### Why put cybersecurity, defence and AI in one practice?

Because the credible field for a senior role in any of the three is small, global, and heavily overlapping. The same population of engineers and commercial leaders recurs across mandates in different countries, and a team that sees that field repeatedly reads it better than four regional teams each seeing a quarter of it. Splitting the field across offices produces four partial views of the same few hundred people.

### Can you run searches that require security clearance?

Yes. We run mandates that require candidates to hold, or be eligible for, high-level security clearance, and we treat clearance as a filter applied at the briefing stage rather than at offer. Where a role requires an existing clearance the credible field can be a fraction of the technically qualified population, and the realistic options are usually to hire someone already cleared, to sponsor a candidate who is eligible, or to restructure the role. We say which of those applies before the search starts.

### Do I have to be in Cyprus to use this practice?

No. The practice is based in Larnaca but the mandates are not. A cybersecurity mandate in Frankfurt, a defence-technology mandate in Washington and an AI mandate in Tel Aviv are all run from Larnaca to the same standard. Where local market knowledge or language matters, the relevant regional hub runs the ground while the practice runs the assessment.

### When is this the wrong firm to appoint?

When the mandate sits entirely inside one national market and a domestic specialist with a twenty-year local network will simply know the field better. The practice earns its place on cross-border, technical and culture-critical briefs where no single national market contains the whole relevant field. If your search is genuinely local and non-technical, say so at the briefing and we will tell you if we are not the right route.

## Start a conversation about your mandate

Whether you are hiring a CISO for a critical-infrastructure operator, an engineering leader for a defence supplier where the shortlist has to be cleared, or a head of applied AI who is not looking, this is the place to start.

What we bring to these mandates:

Executive search and direct headhunting · Talent mapping and market intelligence · Compensation benchmarking and mandate calibration · Connection to KiTalent's [Middle East hub in Nicosia](/nicosia) and [international executive search](/international-executive-search) network.

### Tell us about your hiring challenge

Whether you are running a live mandate or want to pressure-test a brief before going to market, this is the right place to start the conversation.
