Kranj's Electronics Hiring Market: Employers, Possible Cross-Border Competition and the Data Gaps

Kranj's electronics and telecom manufacturing base includes a Kontron site, formerly Iskratel. Employers in Graz and Ljubljana, and remote foreign contracts, may compete for the same engineers, but the sources reviewed found no public series measuring that. The public record documents the employer's ownership history and the Koralm rail line that opened in December 2025. It does not confirm the export, vacancy or pay figures quoted for this market, so this article treats them as open questions.

This article covers three questions for a hiring leader in this market: who employs the engineers, where competition for them comes from, and which market figures can be relied on today.

Who Employs Kranj's Electronics Engineers

One electronics employer in Kranj with a documented ownership history is Kontron d.o.o., formerly Iskratel. The Austrian group S&T acquired Iskratel in 2020 for €37.5 million. S&T's Slovenian unit was merged with Iskratel, and the Kranj company has operated as S&T Iskratel since September 2022. It took the name Kontron, d.o.o. on 3 July 2023, after the parent group had become Kontron AG in 2022. It is part of Kontron AG, which is headquartered in Linz. No site-level headcount for the Kranj operation was located in the sources reviewed.

Public sources do not establish how many engineers the other electronics employers in Kranj employ, or which firms hold most of the sector's engineering roles. The sector's total engineering headcount is therefore an open question, listed at the end of this article.

Where Competition for Engineers Comes From

Graz and the Koralm line

The Koralm line opened to passenger service on 14 December 2025. It links Graz and Klagenfurt over about 127 to 130 kilometres, including a 33-kilometre tunnel, and its fastest Graz–Klagenfurt services take about 41 minutes. The line does not serve Kranj. Graz lies about 124 kilometres north-east of Kranj in a straight line, so the 41-minute Graz–Klagenfurt time should not be used as a Kranj–Graz commute time.

Whether engineers are leaving Kranj for Austrian employers is not established by the sources reviewed. No public migration series for Kranj engineering graduates or employees was located. Firms can test the question against their own applicant and leaver records.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana is about 23 kilometres south-south-east of Kranj in a straight line, which makes it the nearer competitor for the same engineers. The sources reviewed do not quantify the pay or equity practices of Ljubljana's technology, pharmaceutical or fintech employers relative to Kranj, so this article does not rank the two markets on pay.

Remote work for foreign employers

Some senior engineers in the region may work remotely for employers outside Slovenia while living in Kranj. That group competes with on-site employers for the same people, but the sources reviewed do not measure its size. It is a hypothesis to test against a firm's own candidate data.

What the Market Figures Show, and What They Do Not

Figures for Kranj's electronics exports in 2024 were not located in the sources reviewed, so this article makes no claim about export growth or the share of output shipped abroad. The same applies to the Kranj industrial zone's size and occupancy, and to the number of firms and employees in the local electronics sector.

Public figures for engineering vacancy rates in Kranj or Gorenjska were not located. Official vacancy statistics exist at Slovenia level; a regional or occupation-level series is needed before a mandate relies on a vacancy figure. Vacancy numbers quoted in recruitment commentary are not primary data and are not used here.

Occupation-level pay benchmarks for Kranj were not located. A comparison with Vienna, Graz or Munich therefore needs a current salary survey for the specific role before it is used in an offer. Without one, no particular pay gap should be assumed.

Demographic projections for the Gorenjska working-age population, and the age profile of the local electronics workforce, were not located in the sources reviewed.

What a Search in This Market Has to Establish First

For a hiring leader, the practical question is less whether suitable engineers exist than where they work and what would move them. The three points below are analysis drawn from the facts above and from the work these roles involve. They are not sourced market data.

  • Where the candidate works today. An engineer employed on site in Kranj, one commuting to Ljubljana or Graz, and one working remotely for a foreign employer are three different candidate pools, with different objections to a Kranj role.
  • What the offer must contain beyond base pay. Scope, technical and leadership responsibility, career path, and equity or long-term incentives are elements a Kranj employer can design. The sources reviewed do not allow a pay gap to be set against them.
  • Which technical areas the brief names. A brief for these roles should name 5G and O-RAN architecture, RF design for sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands, real-time embedded software, FPGA design and industrial IoT edge protocols, together with the EU radio and cybersecurity rules that apply to the product, such as the Radio Equipment Directive and the Cybersecurity Act. It should be written against the specific product and standard, not the sector label.

Advertised roles may reach mainly candidates who are already looking; the sources reviewed do not measure this for Kranj. For senior RF, embedded and hardware roles, KiTalent's executive search team describes its approach as direct and confidential: candidates are approached individually, and a brief can begin with the role's scope before a salary figure is discussed. That describes KiTalent's method; it is not a finding about the Kranj market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which electronics employers in Kranj are documented?

Public sources document Kontron d.o.o., formerly Iskratel, a Kranj company now part of Kontron AG. They do not establish a full list of other employers or their engineering headcounts, and no site-level headcount for the Kranj operation was located.

How far is Graz from Kranj, and does the Koralm line shorten the journey?

Graz is about 124 kilometres north-east of Kranj in a straight line. The Koralm line that opened in December 2025 connects Graz and Klagenfurt, not Kranj, so it does not shorten a Kranj–Graz journey directly.

What is the vacancy rate for engineering roles in Kranj?

A Kranj or Gorenjska engineering vacancy rate was not located in the sources reviewed. Official vacancy statistics exist at Slovenia level; regional engineering series were not found.

What do senior electronics engineers earn in Kranj compared with Vienna or Munich?

No occupation-level pay benchmark for Kranj was located in the sources reviewed. Use a current salary survey for the specific role and location before setting an offer or comparing it with an Austrian or German offer.
